How Broccoli Almost Got Me Arrested

I know…my title sounds crazy.  But it’s the truth!  I’ll get to the story, but let me say this first:  life is mostly about priorities.  Yeah, not a newsflash, but let me tell you what happened yesterday & by the end, I’m sure you’ll agree!

It seemed like I woke up rushing yesterday.  What happens when I rush?  Nothing I do makes rational sense.  Since I teach a rational subject (math-stop cringing!) this goes against my total makeup.  But hey, when we’re stressed we do dumb stuff.  Anyway, I was rushing to pack orders, way packages, write thank you notes aside from the usual morning routine.  I decided I’d do one smart thing before I left: grab breakfast.  So I grabbed a container that had leftovers from my hubby’s surprise birthday dinner outing (just he & I-so sweet!) & made a mad dash for the door.

I started toward my destination, which I’ve been going to for the last 3.5 years, and started thinking.  Did I just eat steamed broccoli for breakfast?  How in the world is that gonna smell?  What kind of person assaults another human being with broccoli breath?!  So I started digging in my purse for a piece of gum or a mint (or a flamethrower) to be sure I didn’t offend.  Before I knew it, I looked up & realized I was in a much lower speed limit zone.  And what did I spot next?  Yep!  One of the boys in blue.

I was so overcome by my own silliness that I pulled over before he even cranked up!  I already had my car off, license & registration in hand & stuck out of the window before he even got to the back tire!  He did his job & told me what I did wrong.  I admitted that I knew.  I told him about the broccoli breath.  I even showed him the container.  I’ve never seen anyone with a look of confusion like that before.  I had to admit it (in my mind) was the dumbest, most considerate thing I’d done so far that day…speeding so I didn’t blow anyone away with broccoli breath.

Anyway, the story has a happy ending (thank GOD!)  I guess the ridiculousness of the situation amused him so much that he decided to let me off with a warning (and I do have a spotless driving record : D).  I even made it to my meeting-on time!  My breath received no complaints.  Best of all, no one ever suspected that I’d had a run in with the police & got off due to broccoli breath.  I guess the cat is out of the bag now, though.  Just don’t tease me too much about it if  you see me, ok?

The lesson?  Everything that seems important is not always worth rushing over.  You make more mistakes when you rush.  Slow down & get your priorities straight before you make a move.  And most importantly, always have broccoli for lunch or dinner like a normal person!

Thanks for reading!
